The RMYC will be hosting a series of eight lectures on the history of Rock and Rhythm ‘n Blues from 1900 to 1979 at the Royal Malta Yacht Club starting Thursday 1st February at 6pm and on each following Thursday.
The lectures, which will be delivered by Noel Mallia, will consist of the following:-
1. The Blues and the roots of Rock ‘n Roll and Rhythm n’ Blues (1900-1959)
2. The early Sixties and pre-Beatles Rock n Roll – The Beatles – The British Beatboom and Invasion (1960-1965)
3. The Folk Revival (1958-1962) Bob Dylan and Folk-Rock (1962-1965)
4. Rhythm and Blues – The development of – Tamla Motown – Southern Soul – Atlantic Records (1950-1969)
5. Psychedelia – Hippies and the Summer Of Love – Monterey and Altamont – The Vietnam War – The end of a dream (1966-1969)
6. Progressive Rock – Blues Rock – The Birth of Heavy Metal (1967-1975)
7. Singer-songwriters – Country and Soft Rock – The Classic Rock Years (1970-1976)
8. Glam Rock – Punk Rock – Funk and Disco (1970-1979)
Lectures will be of a 75 minute duration, with a ten minute break and are open to RMYC members and friends.
Participation is free of charge but a contribution of €10 per lecture or €25 for the whole series will be collected and donated by the RMYC to the Food Bank Lifeline Foundation.
After each lecture participants are invited to stay on for a drink or dinner at the Club’s Bar & Restaurant.

About Noel Mallia
Noel Mallia has an extensive broadcasting CV having joined Rediffusion Malta as an outside contributor in 1973. He hosted the rock programme ‘Spazju’ . Subsequently he went on producing and presenting various programmes including the Breakfast Show for many years.
In 1975 Noel was the last voice heard on Rediffusion Malta Ltd during Breakfast Show on the 14 February 1975, when broadcasting was nationalised.
He subsequently moved to Radio Malta 1 & 2, kick starting ‘Rockfile’, which still runs to this day on All Rock Radio and other programmes. He left Radio Malta in 1982.
After a hiatus of nearly a decade, in 1991 Noel was invited assist in the setting up of Radio 101 where he produced and hosted programmes, eventually becoming Head of Radio 101 from 2000 until 2010.
In 2011 he launched All Rock Radio on the DAB+ platform taking on the role as Programmes Director. His programmes are syndicated to other stations including Radio 101 now NET FM.
Between 1995 and 2002 he won six Malta Broadcasting Authority awards for the best programmes in the Light Entertainment category between 1995 and 2002.
Throughout his career he has had to opportunity to interview leading rock stars including Duff Mc’Kagan and Dizzy Reed (Guns n Roses) Phil Collen (Def Leppard) Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) Roger Hodgson (Supertramp) Steve Hackett (Genesis) Steve Cropper (Booker T & The Mg’s) John Steel (The Animals) Robert Fisher (Willard Grant Conspiracy) and Barclay James Harvest.
His passion and knowledge of the subject has led him to give a course of lectures on the ‘Rock n Roll’ Years to members of the University of the Third Age.
A graduate in business studies and hailing from a business background, Noel describes himself as a failed guitarist.
