Malta – Syracuse Regatta this weekend

The fifty-eight edition of the Malta – Syracuse Regatta is scheduled to take place on Saturday 14th July.

Organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club in conjunction with the Lega Navale Italiana (Sezione Siracusa), this 85 nautical mile race is the oldest race on the Royal Malta Yacht Club calendar.

Each year the race start alternates between Malta and Syracuse and this year the Royal Malta Yacht Club will be hosting the start on Saturday 14th July at 10am from theSliema seafront and sail to a windward mark before heading to Syracuse to finish in the Porto Grande.

A strong Sicilian fleet is expected to arrive by Friday just in time for a race briefing and social event hosted by the RMYC. Regulars like Squalo Bianco, Hyperion of Turku, Duc in Altum, to mention a few have already registered and more are expected in the coming days. Maltese entries are also coming in nicely with a good mix of new and returning crews being added to the fleet list.

In 2014 Massimo Savoca’s Dreamer Tech established a course record when he completed the race in 08:37:22. So far weather conditions have made it impossible for crews to beat the time clocked by Savoca in 2014, despite valiant attempts in the subsequent years.

The prize-giving ceremony will take place at the Lega Navale in Syracuse on Sunday.
