Club to host the Yachting Malta EurILCA Masters Event

Event forms part of international circuit of races for the ILCA Class

The Royal Malta Yacht Club will be hosting its first international event for 2023 between the 6th and 8th January when it will welcome a sizeable fleet competing in the 2023 Yachting Malta EurILCA Masters event, which forms part of the EurILCA Master Series.

The EurILCA Master is a series of regattas run throughout the year in various stunning venues across Europe and the competition is open to sailors aged over thirty in 2023. Malta will be hosting events for ILCA 7 and ILCA 6 rigs will welcome twenty six sailors hailing from eleven Countries.

Italian’s Roberto Bini and Giuseppe Cavalli, last year’s ILCA Class 7 winner and runner up respectively, as well as a number of other sailors will be returning to our waters.

Racing is scheduled to start on Friday 6th January at 1130hrs in Marsamxett Harbour. Three races per day for a total of nine races are expected to place during the weekend.

“This will be the second time that the Royal Malta Yacht Club will be hosting this event. Following last year’s successful regatta, Malta was once again included in EurILCA’s programme of events.  The EurILCA Masters Series enables us, as a Club,  to provide a wide portfolio of events for all kinds of sailors, in this case dinghy sailors” remarked Club Commodore, David Cremona.

Malta will be represented by three sailors, two of which are Olympians Mario Aquilina and John Tabone who will be joined by Alfred Fenech. They will be racing in the ILCA Class 7 and 6 respectively.

Several of the participating sailors have travelled to Malta earlier on this week for a sailing clinic hosted at the Club by SailCoach enabling them to sample the light winds and flat waters and become familiar with the Maltese conditions while sharpening their downwind technique and building competitive rhythm with a battery of practice races.

SailCoach operates from the Club’s base and has been instrumental in bringing to Malta such events.

“These sailors are making the most of the excellent facilities and conditions that Malta has to offer and are using their time in Malta as  a buildup regatta for the World Championships in Thailand in February.” remarked Trevor Millar, SailCoach Founder.

The 2023 EurILCA Masters event is being supported by Yachting Malta Ltd.
