The oldest race on the RoyalMalta Yacht Club Racing Calendar, the Malta – Syracuse Race takes place thisweekend. Organised in conjunction with the Lega Navale Italiana (SezioneSiracusa), the start of the race alternates each year and attracts a well sizedfleet.
This year, the eighty fivenautical mile race will start from Syracuse on Saturday 15th July. Crews can opt to take part in one of the fiveClasses – IRC, ORC, Open, Classic and Cruiser.
The Race promises to see some friendlyyet competitive racing between the Sicilian and Maltese crews. Such is thepopularity of the race that crews from Ottovolante, Maredo, Skin and Lumar,just to mention a few are already on the fleet list.
Maltese participation is alsogrowing, amongst the entrants is Peter Valentino, racing in the IRC Class,which he won last year. Other entrantsinclude Otra Vez, Janissah, Toddler, Maltese Falcon and Lartista, fresh fromhis recent success at the Hyblea Cub in Ragusa two weeks ago.
Registrations will be accepteduntil the 13th July.
The course record, establishedby Massimo Savoca’s Dreamer Tech in 2014 with a time of 8:37:22 still stands tothe day.
The prize-giving ceremony will take place at the Royal MaltaYacht Club on Sunday 16th July at 20:00hrs.
